the past, removing larger stones often meant invasive surgery or
"keyhole" procedures (PCNL) that required a small puncture through
the back into the kidney. While effective, these methods carry risks of
bleeding and a longer recovery time.
Today,
a cutting-edge technique called Retrograde Intrarenal Surgery (RIRS) is

stones and even treat small tumors.
What
Makes RIRS Different?
RIRS
is a minimally invasive procedure that works with your body’s natural anatomy.
Instead of making an external cut, surgeons use a highly sophisticated, thin,
flexible ureteroscope.
The
scope is passed through the urethra, into the bladder, and up through the
ureter directly into the kidney. Because the scope is flexible, it can navigate
into the "calyces", the tiny, hard-to-reach corners of the kidney
where stones often hide.
Once
the stone is located, a high-precision laser (usually a Holmium or Thulium
fiber laser) is used to "dust" the stone into tiny particles or
fragment it into small pieces that can be removed with a tiny basket.
