Radiology Preparation Guide
Important preparation instructions for your imaging exam. Following these guidelines ensures accurate results.
Important: General Instructions
- Bring your doctor's referral/request form
- Bring your ID card and insurance card (if applicable)
- Bring any previous imaging studies for comparison
- Inform staff if you are pregnant or might be pregnant
- Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing
X-Ray
X-rays typically require minimal preparation. However, please note:
- Remove jewelry, watches, and metal objects from the area being examined
- You may be asked to change into a hospital gown
- For abdominal X-rays, you may need to fast for a few hours
- Women should inform the technologist if pregnant
CT Scan (Computed Tomography)
CT Without Contrast:
- No special preparation required for most scans
- For abdominal/pelvic CT: Fast for 4 hours before the exam
CT With Contrast:
- Fast for 4-6 hours before the exam
- Stay hydrated - drink plenty of water before and after
- Inform staff of any allergies, especially to iodine or contrast dye
- Kidney function test (creatinine) required - bring recent results
- If diabetic on Metformin, consult your doctor about stopping it before the exam
MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging)
Important Safety Information
MRI uses strong magnetic fields. You MUST inform staff if you have any metal implants, pacemakers, cochlear implants, or other electronic devices.
Before Your MRI:
- Remove ALL metal objects (jewelry, watches, hairpins, hearing aids)
- For abdominal MRI: Fast for 4-6 hours
- Wear comfortable clothing without metal zippers or buttons
- The scan takes 30-60 minutes - you must remain still
- If claustrophobic, inform staff - sedation may be available
Ultrasound
Abdominal Ultrasound:
- Fast for 6-8 hours before the exam (water is okay)
- Avoid gas-producing foods the day before
Pelvic Ultrasound:
- Drink 4-6 glasses of water 1 hour before the exam
- Do NOT empty your bladder - a full bladder is required
Obstetric (Pregnancy) Ultrasound:
- First trimester: Full bladder required
- Second/Third trimester: No special preparation
Mammography
- Schedule 1-2 weeks after your period when breasts are less tender
- Do NOT apply deodorant, powder, lotion, or perfume to underarms or breasts
- Wear a two-piece outfit for convenience
- Bring previous mammogram images for comparison
- Inform staff if you have breast implants
